Types of Carpet Cleaning Companies .

There are three basic types of carpet cleaning companies: companies that use employees, companies that use contractors, and owner/operator companies. Which type is the best? As a general rule, the owner/operator type takes first place, the companies using contractors take second place, and the companies that use employees come up third.

An owner/operator keeps his business going based on his reputation, and he really cares about the quality of his work. He will almost always give you the best results. After all, you’re getting your carpet cleaned by the owner of the company. Word-of-mouth advertising is important to small business owners. He is likely to perform better than a contractor and certainly better than an employee.

You have the greatest leverage with an owner/operator. You can speak directly to the head person and not have to call the office to speak with a manager. He has the authority to discount any service or to offer you a special price to get your business.

A contractor can also be a very good choice. They have specialized in cleaning carpets and are likely to have more experience, training, and interest in their work than employees. They’ve invested in their own equipment and tools and are serious about their work. Depending on the agreement they have with the company they are contracting with, they may also have the power to negotiate with you.

If the first two options are not available, and you must hire a carpet cleaning company that uses employees, ask for an employee with five or more years of experience. Frequently, employees are not thoroughly educated in the principles of carpet cleaning or spot removal. Their knowledge of cleaning agents, types of carpets, and cleaning methods may be limited. They are often paid by the hour and take their time. For some employees, this will be “just a job.” Employees cannot negotiate with you or offer you discounts; they quote the price they are told and stick with it.

Of course, there are exceptions. Some companies with employees provide extensive training and hire career-minded individuals. They require ongoing training and certification. You want to ask questions and go with your instincts, too. Honesty, fairness, and reliability are important in any business. You want the person coming into your home to be ethical above all. Don’t go with an owner/operator just because this type of company is usually the best; some owner/operators are dishonest. Do your research before hiring a carpet cleaning company or professional.

You have a wide selection of great carpet cleaning companies to choose from. Some companies are not ethical, so you will want to check references. Carpet is a major investment in your home. If you treat it with care, you can extend the life of your carpet up to seven years.
